Picture Symbol Game Boards are awesome visual supports when playing games! I have used them with students utilizing AAC devices, as well as many students on my caseload. By integrating these symbol boards into gameplay, you can support essential skills such as sequencing, word retrieval, turn taking and verbal expression.
Using Picture Symbol Game Boards offers numerous advantages:
•Enhanced Sequencing: Helps students understand and follow game steps.
•Improved Word Retrieval: Aids in finding and using the right words during play.
•Encouraged Turn-Taking: Teaches patience and the importance of waiting for one's turn.
•Boosted Verbal Expression: Promotes the use of spoken language during interactions.
How to Use the Picture Symbol Boards
•Model the Words: Start by modeling the words and pointing to the picture on the Symbol Board. For instance, say "My turn" or "I go" while pointing to the corresponding images.
•Incorporate During Gameplay: As you play the game, continue to model the words and point to the associated pictures. This helps reinforce language and comprehension.
•Post-Game Reflection: After the game, engage the players by asking if they liked the game. Use visual cues like thumbs up for liking the game and thumbs down for not liking it.
