In addition I just wanted to share a surprise incident that happened this past week!
After 41 years, I made the bittersweet decision to dissolve my S-Corp, Ariel’s Child. The name had always held deep meaning for me—it came from my brilliant, wonderful tortoiseshell cat, Ariel. For 22 years, Ariel’s Child was more than just a school supply, toy, and book store—it was a community, a place filled with learning, laughter, and the joy of discovery.
As I sorted through the mountain of old paperwork I had to keep for preschool records, I stumbled upon something unexpected—a file on a young autistic teenager I had worked with for two years. His name was Daniel. Memories came rushing back: the countless hours we spent together practicing pragmatic skills, visiting Blockbuster and McDonald’s to work on social interactions, and navigating the sometimes cruel world of teenage friendships. When he graduated high school, I even hired him to work in my store, teaching him customer service, pricing products, and stocking shelves. He thrived in that role before moving on to college, where he received additional support.
Little did I know, this chapter of our story wasn’t finished.
As part of dissolving my business, I had to call the local government center in Goshen, NY, to figure out the next steps. While on the phone with a woman there, another employee overheard my name and asked, “Do you know someone named Daniel?”
My heart skipped a beat. Could it be?
I answered, “Yes… his last name is—”
Before I could even finish, she exclaimed, “That’s him!”
I was stunned. My student from 20 years ago, now 37 years old, had been working there since 2014! And as fate would have it, he was the one who would help guide me through this difficult transition.
I rushed to the government center, nerves tangled in the stress of the paperwork and the emotions of the day. But when I arrived, there was Daniel—confident, professional, and ready to help. He patiently walked me through every step of the process, asking his supervisor when needed, making sure every detail was in order. And then, as if to put the perfect bow on this full-circle moment, he notarized my paperwork himself.
What started as a sad day, closing a long and cherished chapter of my life, transformed into something unexpectedly beautiful—a reconnection with a former student who had grown into a capable, independent adult. He gave me permission to post his photo.
