SPEECH STRATEGIES 2022

Hi All! Welcome back to school! I have a light schedule this year but I’ve already been creating product for my new kiddos! In fact, the pic above was for a new little guy I have who just turned 3 in July. We were born on the same day!! He had tubes inserted in May and Mom stated he has made significant progress since then. With this age group have several items ready to go in your back pocket! Have at least 2 movement activities. Toy shelf is hidden by a divider to reduce distractions. My little guy’s favorite toy is… TOOLS! So our first 2 sessions were establishing rapport while we played with TOOLS. He knew the name of every tool! First thing I noticed was that he was not rounding vowels for ooh and oh, eg., saying TUHS FOR TOOLS. So to get to the point for this BLOG he kept noticing my dinosaurs and requested twice. In our third session we focused on dinosaurs! I noticed during the first 2 sessions attention was short, which is typical for 3. So This is not a goal but I worked on lip rounding for ooh and he was actually self prompting by the second session! What a smart cookie. He also exhibits syllable reduction, e.g. ano for another, disau for dinosaur and omits DON’T in his phrases, e.g. me____ want it. I found a bunch of activities I was hoping he would like (cause you never know with a young 3 year old!! ) Sooooo, his attention lasted between 5 and 10 minutes for each activity. I utilized the Core Word approach in this lesson going with his lead. I carefully review the IEP but often it is different by the time a child actually enters therapy. I am still assessing sound patterns utilizing the Articulation Screener (to start I will be working on ooh, multisyllable words, & /w/).

 1. First I always use a timer on my phone - set it for 25 min - 5 min for mom (she sits in on session)

2. Art activity - we GLUED together the dino costume. I also modeled ANOTHER - I want another one (W sounds are inconsistent - ooh + un for one - I modeled lip rounding and he let me PROMPT ooh. I’m going to use the W Carrier Phrase set with PROPS tomorrow too!) Several other multisyllable words were modeled. We are going to dot paint next time . In our last session we did BOOM Cards - Moo Moo has a Boo Boo - great for lip rounding - he imitated throughout this activity!

3. Time to stretch! We stood up and blew bubbles - modeled I do, you do, oops, two

4. Dinosaur time! I made pics and printed 2 sets to play lotto and to match the large dinosaurs I got from Amazon. I PROMPT modeled the word dinosaur and used the drum to beat out the sound. He loved this. We matched pics the same (I go -you go turn taking ) and if he couldn’t find the picture he said I (don’t) know or I (don’t) see- I modeled I DON’T KNOW & I DON’T SEE .

5. Time to move! We finished with Laurie Berkner video - We are the dinosaurs - he loved this!
