WORD RETRIEVAL STRATEGIES
Hi All! Happy Spring! Another TPT Sale starts this Tuesday! Info is above. There is a FREEBIE below for current and new subscribers! I will also send you the link for the FREE Category Titles (Set #3)
Have you ever thought about how you retain information in your brain? It’s like a huge filing cabinet. We think of different ways to remember things, e.g. as acronyms - how many of you know ROYGBIV? Colors of the rainbow! Another popular trick is to go through the alphabet to remember a name or event. In this day and age I go on Google and find the answer instantaneously! But what about little kids who don’t have an extensive vocabulary? Is it due to lack of exposure, experience, or more than that? What are your thoughts? I often include some type of word retrieval warmup with my students, including identifying and labeling items in categories. I just updated a number of materials I have been using for many years. See FREEBIES below! Here is an excerpt from a product I created called Your Brain is Like a Filling Cabinet. Here’s my language hierarchy sequence that helps what a child needs to learn in order to improve word retrieval. There is now an informal screener!
Here’s what CHATGPT added. I was pleased to see if was similar to what I wrote a few years ago! Category sorting is the process of organizing items of information into groups based on similar characteristics or attributes. This improves organization which enhances ability to locate what is needed. Here is their breakdown of levels which are somewhat similar to mine!: 1. Basic-group objects based on color, size, shape, etc 2. Intermediate - group objects by function & features 3. Advanced - group objects based on similarities/differences, same domain, e.g. animals live in forest 4. Super-ordinate - group into subcategories e.g. vehicles 5. Subordinate - group items into more specific categories, e.g. cars & trucks are vehicles. Have you used CHATGPT yet??
