Hi All - The month of April has flown by!

New techie tips for you!

  1. AAC - Those of you who have students using Touch Chat - I downloaded Chat Editor on my computer. When I am doing a remote session with my student I share the screen on Zoom and can model words for her. They just updated Chat Editor so now you can adjust the size and it can fill the whole screen! FYI , last year before my little girl received her Touch Chat I included a goal for identifying categories on her IEP. It has really paid off. We had worked on weather, rooms in house, family, body, greetings, etc. After 3 weeks of receiving her device this March, she had already started independently navigating! This week I saw her in person for the first time since Feb 20. I was amazed how she was able to turn on the device and navigate to greetings with minimal verbal prompt and tell me about her family and more. She was using one-word responses so I modeled 2 and 3-word responses on her device. I trained mom how to use the device and she is now about to edit and add photos of family, etc. She is such a big help and understands that the Touch Chat is her voice. Mind you my little person can communicate in 2-4 word phrase, but only 10% of what she says is intelligible out of context.

  2. BOOM CARDS - I am often sharing my BOOM Cards but never asked if you know what they are.  You do need a Boom Card account which is FREE.  Go to wow.boomlearning.com and sign up.  Once you have an account you can download FREE sets or purchase them.   You can purchase and download on TPT too. Boom Cards are interactive and can be self-correcting.  You can share cards with your students on Google Classroom or send them a link.

I have a new little preschooler who has a feeding goal. His food choices are limited. I am in agreement with Melanie Potock’s approach using the 3 E’s - expose, explore, expand. It’s a slow and steady process. First we had to get him back at the table (that’s right - parents were letting him eat in front of the tv by himself.) He now eats with his family. Next we had to say goodbye to the sippy nipple cup - done! Mom told him that it was not good for his mouth and teeth. He accepted this. Yay! Next was exposing him to new foods without anxiety. Mom purchased a plate with dividers and I came up with a system using his favorite heroes. He is now letting mom put food he doesn’t eat on the same plate. He chooses a hero to eat the food. Before this he would scream and throw the food. In speech I made a cute spinner. He gets to spin and find the hero (PJ Masks and Paw Patrol) and a food for the hero to eat. He really likes this activity. He is now smelling and licking food but not yet eating.
