How TO USE PREDICTABLE BOOKS IN SPEECH SESSIONS
Hi All! HAPPY POETRY MONTH! I hope everyone had an awesome Spring Break and you are refreshed! This week in NY it has reached almost 90 degrees so in my mind the year is over! Oops…2 1/2 months to go and only 3 Annual Reviews left to complete.
I want to share BOOK IDEAS today. How many of you use books during your speech sessions? How do you decide which books to use? My approach to choosing books is very simple. Here are some tips:
Use predictable books - these are books which have a repetitive storyline. Children can fill in the words and recall parts of the story as it is read
Make a list of your favorite books. I created 71 Favorite Predictable Books on TPT which include sounds, video links and activities for each book. There is also a free book list by Speech Sprouts on TPT.
Sort your books by season. Then choose a book you think your child would like.
Read through the book for words and phrases you could use. Write your words & functional core phrases (e.g. I’m lookin g for, She gets ____) on a post it note. I rarely read a book word for word - I modify it to fit the needs of my students. Be repetitive to get numerous trials. For example, I just finished The Old Lady Swallowed a Frog - for my kids working on L I left Old Lady Swallowed, for kids working on K, G - I changed Old Lady to Granny ate or gobbled, 3rd person S - granny eats. absurdities - sooo many, e.g. can you eat gloves? Why not? Not everyone likes the Old Lady but I LOVE her books…well most of her books! It’s POETRY MONTH and all of the Old Lady books rhyme!
Make it fun and interactive with add-ons, e.g. visual props, AAC board, sequence the story board. Model words and phrases then give your child time to respond.
