OCTOBER 2023 PALATAL BLENDING STRATEGIES

Hi All! How many of you have students who struggle with palatal sounds? Over the past year, I've been working with a child who has made significant progress in many aspects of speech but continues to have difficulty with fronting palatal sounds, particularly substituting "TH" for "CH," "SH," and "J." (This little guy experienced phoneme collapse and substituted D for almost every sound.) While techniques like the PROMPT Method and DTTC have been successful in other areas, progress on palatal sounds has been slow.
However, I am thrilled to report a recent breakthrough. I applied a blending technique, similar to what I use for correcting "S" blending, and it worked wonders. Here's how it works:
For "CH," blend the final "T" with "YOU" or "YOUR," e.g., "eatchu." When spoken quickly, these sounds blend together to produce a clear "CH" sound.
For "J," blend the final "D" with "YOU" or "YOUR."
For "SH," blend the final "S" with "YOU" or "YOUR."
