OTITIS MEDIA A PERSONAL JOURNEY - I am devastated! This has NEVER happened to me before! I want to share my sobering tale about OTITIS MEDIA (OM). I would love to know how many of your students have experienced OM. How about YOU or an adult friend? First question I ask parents of a new student with speech and language challenges…has their hearing ever been tested? I can’t tell you how many dozens of children I have referred to an ENT …about 50% of my students have had tubes inserted! It’s amazing how quickly their speech improves afterwards. Several years ago I purchased a SPECv3 Fiber Optic Otoscope which has been so helpful in sharing observations with parents. This is an older durable model My grandmother was deaf. She contracted a virus when she was 45 years old and lost her hearing. Needless to say, my reason for writing about OM today is the fact that I have experienced my first bout of OM as an adult! My husband and I traveled to CA beginning of November. I got a virus on the plane going to CA and coming back! The virus kicked in halfway through our vacation. UGH. I couldn’t hear in my right ear (and still can’t), I was congested, coughing and had a sore throat. As soon as we returned I made an ENT appointment. Diagnosis: double ear fluid & infection, virus, sinusitis. This was a first for me. After taking drugs for a week, I’m recovering….but still can’t hear in my right ear! Did you know that 20% of adults get sick when flying on an airplane? My percentage is much higher - Over the years while flying, I have gotten sick on at least 4 out of 5 occasions! Only 1.5-2.3% of adults 25-85 experience OM. I created this free handout for you, explaining OM with some interesting facts you may not know. Dr. says it may take up to 2 months for me to regain my hearing! Keeping fingers crossed.
