APRAXIA - MOTOR SPEECH DISORDER TIPS

I am excited to share some Apraxia-Motor Speech Disorder tips! I just reviewed Edythe Strand’s amazing DTTC webinars. I am such a fan of her work. I will find out next week if I am accepted into her NYC 2 day seminar. Keeping my fingers crossed. I also recently took Barbara Hodson’s Webinar called Evaluating and Enhancing Children’s Phonological Skills: A Systematic Approach with the ASHA Learning PASS. I brought back out my Super Duper phone because she states the importance of children hearing the words they produce. I utilize whatever approach works for a child….each child is so different. Not all children fit into the same rigid cookie cutter pattern. I may utilize 3 different approaches with one child! I often start with PROMPT Method and Knowledge of Performance. Even after all these years (47 so far) I am still learning new strategies for success. Here are some techniques I’ve recently been using with my new little 3-5 year olds:

  1. Establish rapport! - I started with the most adorable and smart 3 year old this week who was sooo timid in his first session. He clung to his mom. We just played in this first session. He loved playing with the cars and then we moved on to playdough. I got a decent language sample but did not put any pressure for him to say any words. In the second session I hear him running to the door! He zoomed in and gave me a big hug and a Hot Wheels sticker! WOW! He was a different kid! I thanked him and put the sticker on my shirt. I saved the sticker and added it to his folder too.

  2. Assess sound stimulability of vowel sounds - check rounding of vowels /u/ and /o/, check vertical open and close of vowels /a/ & /ae/. and check retraction of vowels /e/ and /i/. I have charts which show front vs back vowels as well. I look at diphthongs but this requires production of 2 vowels.   3. Assess stimulability of consonant sounds in CV & CVCV combos during play - here are some pics of animal sounds, environmental sounds and more. In therapy, I always start with sounds the child can imitate. Once the child trusts me, I pair toys, iPad apps (e.g. Tutor Pro, Cookie Doodle, My Play Home are favorites), Boom Cards (e.g. Moo Moo’s Boo) and pictures for home practice in their speech notebook. I am also IN LOVE with my Super Duper Mini Mouth! The first suggestion I usually give families is to go on a scavenger hunt around the house and find items with their sounds - put up a post it note! I want them to have immediate success because it is such a motivator and gives them self-confidence. Note that W & Y are glides because 1. W - start with rounded lips -2 vowels glide together, e.g. /u/+/a/=wah and 2. L - Start with retracted lips - /i/+/u/=you. I hope you find these tips helpful!
